Addressing wrist fatigue

TLDR

Pros: Great support for your wrists when using mouse and keyboard, low profile, easy to hide away, lets you whiz across the table between devices while being supported.

Cons: Might take some time getting used to the sensation of using it (but that is a good thing).

My wrist was starting to hurt a lot… and I was wondering what I could do. Just like anyone else working long hours, calls, emails all those things are starting to take its toll, and one particular body part that seems to be suffering the most, and that was my wrist. I know exactly what the cause is, the desk I am working on is too high, the chair I am sitting on is too, and while I could look at ergonomics to address it… the timing isn’t right. My family and I are in a temporary accommodation while our apartment is being renovated, and it is there I would be redefining my work experience. Until then, I am going to be making do with we have, and the furniture that is here. However that doesn't mean I can’t try some new things.

In preparation for my own redesigned work from home environment, I have become addicted to videos on YouTube that others have showcased. On one particular video I saw one YouTube creators hands whizzing across the desktop between mouse and keyboard without changing height, and I was wondering to myself, how is he doing that?

This is when they introduced the Carpio 2.0…

Nestled gently under the base of the palm of the hand, and just above the wrist, this small and simple device, keeps your wrist elevated and at a better angle to interact with your input devices, mouse and keyboard. At first when I saw it, I thought it was a very static accessory which sat in a single place, but once you start you use it, you quickly realize that its meant to give you the ability to move swiftly around the desk while still being supported, just like the YouTube creator had done. In fact, he actually had two of them under both hands (I only bought one to see what it would be like), and its something I’d like to be able to try at some point, rather than just the one I am using under my right hand.

This is the side that goes on your desk… dont get this wrong.

When I did take it out the box, instructions were somewhat limited, and I had a 50/50 chance of not using it correctly… and of course, I screwed it up. I had it upside down and when I put my wrist on it, I thought, “This is not very comfortable…”, then I turned it over… “Aaaahhhhh bliss.”, thank god no one saw me use if the first time.

The low profile of the Carpio 2.0

Placement is everything, and you want to make sure you get it right, at first you might be concerned about the profile of this under your hand and how strange it will feel, well I am not going to lie, it did feel strange, but it wasn't awkward at all. In fact even the box says, it's going to take a little time to get used to it, so be prepared for something a little different.

The Carpio 2.0 in its little travel bag, and its placement just behind the mouse

They definitely thought about the fact that you are going to be taking this with you, and this benefited me greatly, as I leave my laptop, keyboard and mouse at the office, and when I come home I use a different set of gear. With its little travel bag I can pack this up at the end of the day and take it to where I am going to be working.

Thoughts on the Carpio 2.0

Having only used it for a week or two, I know I am in the “getting used to it” phase, but this evening when I packed it up in my bag for a trip to the office tomorrow, and then realizing I wanted to write up this article and doing without, I really missed the support that it gave me… maybe I could have been less lazy and got it out, but hey when inspiration strikes.

I know there are many other options when it comes to these sorts of wrist supports, and there are some pretty incredible and stylish ones, but the fact that this moves with my workflow and my hands instead of taking up a huge amount of space seemed like a massive benefit to me.
